Week 18

Baby

Your baby is still growing strong, weighing in this week at around 7 lbs.12 ounces and nearly 5 lbs. 12 inches in length. Baby's heart consists of four chambers and is beginning to build muscle cells. This week, baby's heart is pumping almost 30 quarts of blood each day! Myelin, a protective covering is beginning to form around the baby's nerves. This covering will continue to form after birth and through baby's first year of life. If your baby is a girl, her uterus and fallopian tubes have moved into their final position. If you are carrying a little boy, he may just show his genitals when you visit the doctor's office for your ultrasound.

Note: Every baby develops a little differently — even in the womb. The information listed on this site is designed to give you a general idea of your baby’s current development.

Mommy

This week, your uterus is the size of a small melon. With your increasing size, it is likely becoming harder to get a good night's sleep. You may find yourself tossing and turning in the bed trying to get comfortable. You may want to try a pregnancy pillow to help support your growing body. Remember, the best way to sleep is on your left side. There is a vein in your body called the inferior vena cava. The purpose of this vein is to return blood back to your heart. Sleeping on your left side will help prevent the weight of your uterus from compressing this vein.

If you work in a profession that carries high stress, you need to start reducing the stress you deal with daily. Stress is not good for the baby, or yourself. Studies show that a high amount of stress during pregnancy can lead to a pre-term birth, or low birth weight baby. Some easy ways to reduce the stress you may often find your self under are:

  1. Say "No"-Just because someone asks a favor of you, doesn't mean you have to do it.
  2. Cut back on your chores-use that time to rest, read a book, or take a nap.
  3. Make sure to get regular exercise, such as swimming or walking.
  4. Eat a well balanced diet.
  5. Get plenty of rest, it's okay to go to bed early.
