Week 17

Baby

This week the baby is weighing in at about 5 ounces, and as much as 6 1/2 inches in length. If you were to hold him he would fit snuggly in the palm of your hand. He or she is starting to grow fat deposits under skin to help maintain warmth. His hearing is now active and loud noises may startle him. He is very mobile, kicking and squirming using many of his joints. Doctors recommend that despite the tiny size of your little guy, the feel of your touch may do a lot to make him feel safe and warm inside the womb. Try rubbing your tummy in a calm circular motion. This will help to comfort him as well as start to create a bond between the two of you that will carry on after his birth. It will also allow you as a mother to feel more in touch with your unborn bundle of joy. Other doctors advise that playing music to your unborn child may also sooth him. At this stage, his hearing has began to function and there is evidence that he may actually respond to the tunes you play him by kicking or wiggling around.

Note: Every baby develops a little differently — even in the womb. The information listed on this site is designed to give you a general idea of your baby’s current development.

Your tummy has probably grown enough that people may begin to notice. This is probably as good a time as any to start shopping for some maternity clothes. Pretty soon, you won't be able to squeeze into your pre-pregnancy favorites any longer. Also, if you have a naval ring, check out Pregnancy Piercings™ for options on keeping it throughout your pregnancy. You may be starting to feel the baby flutter around in there, although it won't be a normal consistency of movements for a few more weeks to come. An increase in your bodily secretions will lead to an above normal amount of vaginal discharge. Don't be alarmed, this is normal for this stage of your pregnancy. Remember, do not douche. Douching can introduce air into your vagina, which can be harmful for your pregnancy. Also, tampons are unsafe as well. The best way to cope with this uncomfortable side effect is to wear panty liners that will absorb it.
