Week 16

Baby

This week baby is 4 1/2 inches long and 3 1/2 ounces in weight, comparable to the size of a kiwi. In the few coming weeks, she will take on a huge growth spurt, adding many inches to her length and nearly doubling her weight. At this point, her eyes have moved from her neck toward the front of her head and her ears are almost to their final position on each side of her head. Her eyes are beginning to move slowly, although they are still fused shut and she will be reactive to light. If you put a flashlight up to your tummy, she will likely turn herself away from the bright light. Pretty soon, you will get to meet her (or him) for the first time via ultrasound. This is a very exciting time in your pregnancy because you will actually see the little person inside of you. And if you are curious, you may even be able to determine the sex of the baby.

Note: Every baby develops a little differently — even in the womb. The information listed on this site is designed to give you a general idea of your baby’s current development.

Mommy

You have an increased blood flow to your skin which is responsible for that wonderful pregnant "glow". If anyone (or everyone) has been telling you how great you look, they are noticing your glow. You probably feel much better in general, since your hormones have settled and your nausea has eased up. If you haven't yet felt the baby move, don't worry, many mothers do not feel it for as long as 22 weeks! Continue on with your healthy diet to avoid gaining too much weight. Also, try to get some regular exercise, like swimming, or taking a walk daily. Avoid the attitude that "I am pregnant, I can eat what I want, and everything I want" You don't want to gain too much weight, which will stick with you after the baby is born. If you continue to make healthy choices and try to exercise a little each day, you can easily avoid over gaining.
