Week 13

Baby

This week baby is about 2-3 inches long and weighs approximately 3/4 ounce. She is now able to turn her head to the left and right, and she is practicing her breathing movements as her chests rises and falls. Her vocal cords are beginning to develop and form her larynx. Her tiny hair follicles, called Lanugo will start growing this week and will eventually cover her entire body! Fingerprints have developed on her tiny little fingers, and her body size is starting to catch up with her head. She can smile now and is actually practicing her swallowing reflex by swallowing the amniotic fluid, which will pass back out through her urine. Not to worry, the fluid is not harmful to her at all. She is now nearing the end of the embryonic period and will soon begin to grow as much as an inch a week.

Note: Every baby develops a little differently — even in the womb. The information listed on this site is designed to give you a general idea of your baby’s current development.

Mommy

Now that you are into the second trimester, many of the uncomfortable side effects of your first trimester should pass. The morning sickness should end, and you will soon experience a lot more energy than you've had the past 12 weeks. Many mothers will report that they actually start to "feel" pregnant this week. Now that you are into the 2nd trimester, your chance for miscarriage has dropped significantly. It's also time to start thinking about how you are going to drop the big news to everyone (if you were able to wait this long)!
