Circumcision: A very big decision!
If you are having a baby boy, one of the things are your mind may be the decision to circumcise. For
many parents, this is a very big decision to make. For some, it is a no brainer. We have put together some facts for those of you who have not yet decided.
What is circumcision?
Circumcision is cutting away part or all of the foreskin of the penis, allowing free retraction of the foreskin beyond the glans penis.

- 60% of newborn boys today are circumcised.
The Pros
Males who are circumcised:
- Have a slightly lower risk of urinary tract infections.
- Have a lower risk of penile cancer.
- Have a lower risk of STD's by preventing growths under the foreskin.
- Have prevention of foreskin infection.
- Have prevention of phimosis.
- Experience easier genital hygiene.
The Cons
- Rare complications may include: bleeding, infection, incorrect cutting of the foreskin, and improper healing.
- Increased chance of meatitis (inflammation of the opening on penis.)
As parents, your thoughts on circumcision may be influenced by what you read, but the final decision is completely up to you and what you want for your child. If you have questions or concerns, be sure to address them with your doctor.
If you decide to have the procedure performed, it is important that you care for it properly while healing. Proper care for circumcision includes:
- Keep the penis as clean as possible.
- Clean with mild soap and avoid using baby wipes.
- Apply a dab of vaseline to the tip of the penis, or the front of the diaper to avoid any discomfort or dryness on the area.
