Circumcision: A very big decision!
Continued...
With proper care, the circumcision will heal within 7-10 days. It is normal for it to appear red and swollen in the beginning. You may even notice small dots of blood in the diaper. All of this is routine, no need to worry.
Call the doctor immediately if you notice:
- Persistent bleeding or blood in diaper
- Increased redness
- Fever
- Signs of infection such as pus or discharge
- Not urinating normally within 12 hours of the circumcision
With proper medical care, all of these problems can be easily treated.
When deciding, please remember, circumcision is not essential, nor is it harmful to the baby's health. The American Academy of Pediatrics do not endorse the procedure as a way to prevent any of the medical conditions mentioned previously. The AAP also does not find sufficient evidence to medically recommend circumcision or argue against it.
